Heat pipe cooling tower from Miba

For high power dissipation in tight spaces

Modern SiC, GaN, and MOSFET modules generate more heat than conventional air coolers can dissipate. Miba’s heat pipe cooling tower bridges this gap without requiring modifications to the housing, pumps or cooling fluid infrastructure.

When a heat pipe cooling tower can provide relief

SiC, GaN, and MOSFET modules today generate more power loss than they did five years ago.

Liquid cooling would be an option, but it involves pumps, piping, infrastructure and maintenance. Many systems are not designed to accommodate this:

  • The installation space is fixed: the housing, cabinet, or drive remain unchanged. Nevertheless, the thermal load increases.
  • Vertical installation: Convection coolers lose efficiency when installed vertically. Hot spots develop where heat is not dissipated evenly.
  • Switching to liquid cooling is not possible: weight, complexity or system limitations preclude this

Our solution: the heat pipe cooling tower

The Heat Pipe Cooling Tower is a highly efficient, vertically configured air cooler designed specifically for demanding thermal applications.

By integrating multiple heat pipes into a flow-optimized fin stack, heat is absorbed directly at the source, efficiently transported via a two-phase mechanism and rapidly dissipated into the airflow.

  • Customizable configuration: Complete flexibility in the number, diameter, and layout of the heat pipes, as well as the tower geometry, for precise optimization for your system.
  • CFD-optimized design: Each design is calculated using state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to ensure precise thermal performance tailored to your specific boundary conditions and environmental parameters
  • Wide range of materials: Choose between aluminum or copper base plates, as well as various coating options for optimal corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity.
  • Effective hotspot reduction: Heat pipe technology ensures rapid heat dissipation and uniform heat transfer to the fins, reliably preventing temperature spikes.
  • Unlimited form factor customization: With virtually unlimited options for size and shape, the design fits perfectly into existing installation spaces and is ideal for challenging retrofit applications.

"Compared to skived air cooling in the same setup, the heat pipe cooling tower can achieve a ~23% lower temperature difference at the heat sink surface.

For retrofit projects, it is crucial that the cooling system adapts to the system, not the other way around.

The tower approach makes efficient use of the available installation height and can be flexibly scaled and configured."

Applications for heat pipe cooling towers

The heat pipe cooling tower really comes into its own wherever power density is increasing but available installation space is limited:

Next-generation power electronics

SiC, GaN, MOSFETs, and IGBTs generate enormous power dissipation in a very small space. The Heat Pipe Cooling Tower efficiently dissipates these peak loads, even when the installation space remains the same.

Industrial inverter and converter systems

Large-scale plants and systems with high heat input require reliable heat dissipation. The maintenance-free design of the heat pipe cooling tower ensures maximum operational reliability.

E-Mobility and aviation

In the fields of mobility and aviation, every gram counts. The system delivers superior cooling performance with minimal weight. This makes it possible to achieve the required thermal performance without the need for heavy, complex additional infrastructure.

Retrofit und redesign

Often, existing systems need to be made more powerful without changing their footprint or enclosure design. The heat pipe cooling tower utilizes the existing height and enables significant performance improvements.

Frequently Asked Questions about the heat pipe cooling tower

The heat pipe cooling tower is ideal for modern power semiconductors such as SiC, GaN, MOSFETs, and IGBTs, as well as corresponding modules. It is the optimal choice when high power dissipation needs to be efficiently dissipated in extremely tight spaces.

No. The heat pipe cooling tower is a purely passive solution. It operates without pumps, external power sources or additional infrastructure for cooling media.

Heat pipes use a closed-loop phase-change cycle. By evaporating and condensing a working fluid inside the pipe, heat is transferred highly efficiently without the need for an external energy source.

For an initial assessment, we need at least your target values for thermal resistance (Rth) or the maximum allowable temperature difference (ΔT max), as well as information on the available installation space and the mechanical interfaces.

Yes. If you have finished drawings that include tolerances and inspection requirements, our Solution Team will be happy to assist you. We will conduct a thorough feasibility analysis and provide you with prompt feedback.

Because the system is mechanically robust and has no moving parts or fluid circuits, it is virtually maintenance-free. This reduces operating costs and increases system reliability.

We support you every step of the way, from prototyping to mass production. Cost-effectiveness depends heavily on geometry and material. We’d be happy to advise you on which design best suits your planned order volume.

Since every design is unique, there is no standard lead time. However, thanks to our in-house simulation and validation processes, we follow a “first-time-right” approach that accelerates the development process and enables short lead times.

Both our thermal engineering operations and the manufacturing of our heat pipe cooling towers are based in Central Europe. From there, we provide you with comprehensive support, from the initial design phase through to the start of series production.
